Growing and selling Certified Organic vegetables for Austin, Texas for 21 years!

Organic Ellan Selling Vegetables in Austin

Certified Organic in 1989.  When we began selling Organic Vegetables back in 1989 we faced challenges that involved being one of the first certified organic farms in the state of Texas.  We grew local, fresh and quality vegetables, but had difficulties finding an avenue to our customers.  We learned quickly that wholesaling to supermarkets was not a way to make the farm sustainable.  We needed to get directly to everyone who'd be eating our produce.

Farmer's Markets.  We found the local farmer's markets the way to go.  We joined the local market that set up twice a week in Seguin, Texas.  Back in 1989 not everyone was ready for the Organic food movement and we quickly found that our little town would not be enough to sustain our bounty.

South Austin Farmer's Market.  We then found a small farmer's market in Austin, Texas.  Austin was beacon for the Organic food movement in Texas and it became our home.  We'd set up every Saturday morning outside one of the signature Mexican restaurants in Austin, named El Gallo.  We made that our home for the next 15 years.
Organic Farm House
Austin's Farmer's Market.  In 2006 we joined Sustainable Food Center in their effort to provide Austin with a quality farmer's market.  We still set up here during the year when we can.  The market is in downtown Austin on 5th and Guadalupe.

Community Supported or Sustained Agriculture (CSA) in Austin.  We now farm solely for our CSA family.  As our farm grew we also outgrew what we could sell at a farmer's market.  We still didn't want to have to deal with produce managers at retail supermarkets or the local organic vegetable delivery services that were now springing up.  It never made sense to us to sell to a middle man who would just sell raise the price on the vegetables before they got to you.  We needed to find hungry families who'd be willing to invest in our farm with a promise to receive the harvest when it came in.  Changing our farm to a Community Supported or Sustained Farm was the right direction.  It has allowed our small farm to find a consistent path to our customers.
